Training
At RGSL, we are committed to the provision of high-quality, cost-effective technical training. Our course presenters have many years of experience and have been involved in in vocational training and assessment and/or teaching at graduate/postgraduate level. We offer established, certified courses and also can design and deliver courses specifically to meet the particular needs of individual clients.
Three tiers of training course are available
- Awareness training
- Technical development training
- Vocational training
- Recent courses have included:-
- High-resolution seismic reflection (4 days)
- Exploration seismology (30 weeks, 6hrs/week) - Guided vocational learning.
- Introduction to EM ground conductivity surveying (1 day)
Considerable benefit can be obtained from making personnel aware of new technologies and skills as well as establishing a better understanding of existing ones. Our awareness training courses can range from:
- A one-hour seminar, typically delivered at lunchtime or after work at the client’s offices
- A full-day series of talks, perhaps with hands-on demonstrations, to give greater exposure to particular material or to a range of subjects
Courses titles include:
- An introduction to environmental geophysics for engineers
- The use of geophysics for the investigation of contaminated land and landfills
- Engineering geophysics for the investigation of structures
- Geohazard assessment from satellite imagery
Some clients require detailed training courses that not only increase personnel awareness, but also their skill base. To cater for this, we have developed a series of one-day modules based around specific geophysical techniques and applications. Each course has a common structure based on the following model:
- Introduction to basic theory and scientific principles
- Methods of deployment and operation
- Methods of data analysis
- Practical demonstration of equipment (where appropriate)
- Examples of interpretation techniques, including pitfalls
Where necessary we can call upon experts from outside RGSL to complement our personnel. To complement presentations, we provide course notes and in some cases follow-up support.
Examples of courses provided include:
- An introduction to ground-penetrating radar for archaeological and Quaternary studies (in association with the Natural Environment Research Council)
- Ground-penetrating radar for the investigation of engineering structures
- Electromagnetic, microgravity, magnetrometry, electrical resistivity and seismic surveying techniques (one day for each technique)
Where longer-duration training is appropriate, vocational training can be provided either by supplying a trainer to work alongside personnel in the client’s offices, or by having trainees working under our supervision at our offices in North Wales. Training periods can vary from a few days to many weeks, depending upon requirements. We can also consider longer-duration work placements, subject to funding and practical considerations.
This type of training has included:
- Structural glaciological analysis training to personnel from the Nepalese government based in our North Wales offices
- Glacial geology, applied geomorphology and geophysics training provided in country and on site in the Himalayas in Nepal
- Applied glaciology and remote sensing analysis for government personnel in Bhutan
- Work placements for sandwich and postgraduate students
